Investing in capacity, value and reach

A co-operative only stays strong by reinvesting in its members. As landings and markets evolve, Victoria Co-op puts capital into the holding, handling and shipping capacity that lets us protect quality, extend our season and reach more customers.

Reinvesting in the fishery

Turning strong landings into lasting capacity

When conservation efforts by our harvesters translated into stronger lobster landings, the Co-op chose to reinvest — expanding the infrastructure that lets us hold, process and ship live and frozen product at the quality our buyers expect.

These projects are about adding value for members and customers alike: holding live product longer, processing beyond the traditional season, and opening direct live-shipping routes to distant markets.

Recent and ongoing projects

Lobster pound

Expanded live holding capacity

An additional outside holding tank (69 ft × 23 ft) added storage for a further 57,600 pounds of live lobster, letting the Co-op hold and market live product to meet demand through strong-landing years.

Live snow crab

Shipping live, worldwide

The Co-op developed a live snow crab shipping programme — moving beyond initial test shipments to send live crab to customers across Canada and internationally, in partnership with an established Nova Scotia live-shellfish dealer.

Chilled-water holding

Processing beyond the season

Engineering of an expanded chilled-water holding facility lets the Co-op continue processing lobster long after the season has closed — extending production and steadying supply for buyers.
